Background

The Radio Larrakia Indigenous Broadcasting Training Program was developed and implemented in March 2006 as part of the restructure of the Indigenous radio station and has since become the centrepiece of the Radio Larrakia 94.5FM Indigenous Program.

The CEO Donna Odegaard identified the lack of comprehensive Indigenous programs in broadcasting, employment, training, education and cultural awareness around the significance of the radio station as the only Aboriginal community station licensed to broadcast in the Darwin and surrounding area. Promoting the culture and language of the Larrakia Traditional Owners of Darwin and the surrounding areas was paramount to the new structure and direction of Radio Larrakia 94.5 FM.

"The aim of Radio Larrakia 94.5 FM is to promote Larrakia culture and language to the Darwin and surrounding region combined with news, sport and information in a radio format through broadcast media and the arts"

Direction

The importance of the Indigenous programs is to ensure the direction of Radio Larrakia 94.5 FM is promoted and practiced in all broadcasting, programs and participation at Radio Larrakia.

Integral to success of the Indigenous Broadcasting Training Program was the commencement of increasing the participation of Indigenous people in training, employment and development in all areas of broadcasting, media and the arts.

The Radio Larrakia Indigenous Broadcasting Training Program provides culturally appropriate training for all broadcasters at Radio Larrakia and groups wishing to be trained in all areas of our Indigenous broadcasting program and professional development.

With the expansion of Radio Larrakia to multi-media and arts, the Indigenous Broadcasting and Training Program provides future training in television broadcasting and film production, visual arts, dance, print media and publications, language, cultural protocols and ethics and events management.

Success and Achievements - THE FUTURE

The Indigenous Broadcasting Training Program successfully trained and created career pathways to employment for six Indigenous participants in full time jobs within the first twelve months with a further eight full time positions being filled. Training has been provided for over one hundred broadcasters in the past eighteen months for Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members in urban, rural and remote areas of the Northern Territory.

The Indigenous Broadcasting Training Program successes to date include:

  • Increased Indigenous employment
  • National Indigenous events
  • Major Competitions and Prizes
  • Expansion to developing multi media and the arts training including television, film, visual arts, music, dance and print media
  • Increased Indigenous community participation in broadcasting
